About the Platform
What is Your Own World?
Your Own World (YOW) is an all-in-one worldbuilding and writing platform designed for novelists, fantasy writers, D&D dungeon masters, TTRPG creators, and storytellers. It brings together a manuscript editor, character manager, lore encyclopedia, interactive map builder, timeline tool, family tree builder, story outline, ideas board, and AI writing assistant — all in one connected creative workspace. Instead of juggling separate tools, writers can manage their entire story world in one place.
What is worldbuilding software?
Worldbuilding software is a dedicated tool for creating, organising, and managing the details of a fictional world — its characters, history, geography, lore, cultures, rules, and relationships. Unlike general note-taking apps or word processors, worldbuilding software is purpose-built for fiction writers. Your Own World is worldbuilding software that also includes a full manuscript editor, so writers can build and write in the same platform.
Who is Your Own World built for?
YOW is built for novelists, fantasy and science fiction writers, D&D dungeon masters and game masters, TTRPG creators, screenplay writers, lore creators, worldbuilders, and any storyteller who needs to keep complex world details organised. If you're writing a novel, running a campaign, or building a fictional universe — YOW is designed with you in mind.
Is Your Own World good for fantasy writers?
Yes — the platform is designed with genre fiction writers in mind. The tools — magic system lore, maps, family trees, faction management, timelines, world history — are exactly what fantasy and science fiction writers need. The AI assistant is also useful for worldbuilding consistency checks, naming, and creative development within your established world.
Is Your Own World suitable for beginners?
Yes. You don't need to fill in every section before you start writing. Start with what you know — even just the manuscript or a few characters — and build outward as you write. The platform grows with your story. More structured worldbuilders can also build everything upfront before touching the manuscript.
Features
Can Your Own World manage D&D campaigns?
Yes. Your Own World works excellently as a D&D campaign manager. Dungeon masters use it to track NPCs and relationships, manage maps and locations, document faction politics, maintain a campaign timeline, store world lore, and build family trees for noble houses. It's system-agnostic and works for any TTRPG system. Learn more about D&D campaign features →
Does Your Own World support timelines?
Yes. The timeline builder lets you record world history, character arcs, and campaign events in chronological order. Timeline events link to lore entries, locations, and characters. You can maintain multiple timelines per project — a world history, a character arc timeline, and a campaign session log. See the timeline builder →
Can I build family trees in Your Own World?
Yes. The visual family tree builder lets you map lineages, dynasties, and character bloodlines. Each node links to a full character profile. You can build multiple trees per project. See the family tree builder →
Does Your Own World include map building?
Yes. The interactive map builder lets you upload a custom map image and place location pins. Each pin links to a location profile. You can create multiple maps per project — world maps, regional maps, city maps, and dungeon layouts. See the map builder →
Can I organise lore in Your Own World?
Yes — the lore encyclopedia lets you create structured entries for every piece of world knowledge: magic systems, religions, artefacts, languages, laws, cultural traditions, and historical events. Entries are categorised, searchable, and linked to characters, locations, and timeline events. See the lore management tools →
Does Your Own World include AI writing tools?
Yes. The built-in AI writing assistant has access to your actual project data — your characters, chapters, lore entries, and world notes. It's context-aware, not a generic chatbot. Use it to develop characters, continue scenes, brainstorm lore, check consistency, or explore plot possibilities. Learn about the AI assistant →
Is there a manuscript / writing editor?
Yes. Your Own World includes a full manuscript editor with support for acts, chapters, and scenes. It tracks word counts, supports writing goals, and shows pacing data. You can export your manuscript to DOCX format. The editor is designed for long-form writing and integrates directly with the worldbuilding tools in the same workspace.

How does Your Own World compare to World Anvil?
Both handle worldbuilding, but differently. World Anvil is a very extensive wiki-style platform with many templates and a strong community. Your Own World is more focused on the writing workflow — it combines worldbuilding with a full manuscript editor and context-aware AI assistant in a simpler interface. Writers who find World Anvil overwhelming often find Your Own World easier to actually use while writing.
